The Ultimate Moving Day Checklist

A move has dozens of small tasks, and it’s easy to forget one. Use this week-by-week checklist to stay organized from the day you sign your lease to your first night in your new home.

6–8 weeks before your move

• Choose your moving date (weekdays and mid-month are usually cheaper).
• Get a guaranteed moving quote and book your movers.
• Create a moving folder for quotes, leases and receipts.
• Start decluttering: sell, donate or recycle what you don’t need.

4 weeks before

• Order boxes and supplies, or book packing services.
• Start packing rooms you use least.
• Book elevators and reserve parking at both addresses.
• Arrange storage if your move-in date doesn’t line up.

2 weeks before

• Transfer or set up electricity, internet and home insurance.
• Forward your mail and update your address with banks and government services.
• Confirm the details of your move with your coordinator.
• Use up frozen and perishable food.

The day before

• Finish packing and label every box.
• Disconnect electronics and defrost the freezer.
• Pack your essentials box and an overnight bag.
• Charge your phone and keep the crew’s contact number handy.

On moving day

• Walk through the home with your crew lead and point out fragile items.
• Keep valuables, keys and documents with you.
• Do a final check of closets, cabinets, the balcony and storage locker.
• Take photos of your old home and read the meters if needed.

After the move

• Check your belongings and report any concerns right away.
• Set up beds first — you’ll thank yourself tonight.
• Unpack the kitchen and bathroom next.
• Update your address everywhere you forgot (subscriptions, online stores, employer).
